How a .si domain transfer works

Auction X · Updated 3 November 2026

Short answer

Selling a .si domain means a holder change: the seller asks their registrar to change the registered holder to the buyer, the buyer confirms it, and Register.si records the new holder. It's different from moving a domain to another registrar, which doesn't change who owns it.

Holder change and registrar transfer are different things

A buyer can move the domain to their own registrar after the holder change, but the holder change is what makes them the owner.

  • •Holder change: the domain gets a new owner. This is what a sale needs.
  • •Registrar transfer: the same owner moves the domain to a different registrar, for example to get a better renewal price. Ownership doesn't change.

The steps in a sale on Auction X

  1. 01The seller asks their registrar to change the holder to the buyer, within 2 days of the sale.
  2. 02The buyer confirms the change with the registrar, usually by email.
  3. 03The buyer publishes a private token in the domain's DNS, which shows they now control it.
  4. 04Auction X checks the registry: the holder handle must have changed after the sale, the buyer's token must be live, and nothing may block the domain.
  5. 05When all of that passes, the buyer is charged and the seller's payout follows after a 24-hour inspection window.

How Auction X verifies it

We read the domain's record from Register.si (RDAP and WHOIS). Each holder has an opaque handle; when it changes, the holder has changed. We also confirm the buyer's DNS token through several independent resolvers.

Controlling DNS alone isn't enough. The seller is paid only once the registry shows a new holder, so someone who could change DNS but doesn't own the domain can never collect.

When something goes wrong

  • •The seller doesn't start the transfer in 2 days: the buyer is refunded automatically.
  • •The domain isn't what was listed: the buyer reports it during the inspection window, the payout stops, and the Auction X team resolves it. If the domain wasn't delivered as listed, the buyer gets a full refund.

Questions

Does the .si registry charge for a holder change?
No, Register.si doesn't charge for a holder change. Your registrar may charge its own fee.
Do I need a special registrar to receive a .si domain?
You need an account with an accredited .si registrar to hold the domain. Many registrars around the world sell .si names.
Can the seller take the domain back after the transfer?
Not without you: once the registry shows you as the holder, only you can change the holder again through your registrar.

Ready when you are.

Verified sellers, card held not charged, no buyer fees.
